- the parents’ generation, who taught their children to hate white people (“dogs”)
- the parents’ generation for cheering on the younger generation in their fight against the apartheid regime and did not intervene, even when they turned on other blacks (“traitors”) and killed them like wild beasts (necklacing)
- the centuries of oppression during which the blacks developed “a slow, simmering and seething hate” that exploded when Amy Biehl showed up in a black neighborhood
- Amy Biehl should not have been there in the first place
